Sometimes our 3yo makes up words – as children are wont to do – and it honestly frustrates us a little bit because we don’t know what she’s trying to tell us (obviously). And when we ask her to define the word for us, we remember at first but then have to ask her a few times after since we tend to forget.
Easy to do, I guess, because they sound like foreign words, and we’re just hearing them instead of reading them, also. Feels like we’re a bit behind the eight-ball, so to speak.
Then we just realized this is exactly how our daughter must feel when we use new words she doesn’t know. We have to define them for her and repeat the word so she gets it.
(Duh. She’s only three!)
Yet she still picks up the words rather quickly – often faster than we pick up hers.
