Is it just me, or do all parents wonder exactly what their kids think of stuffed animals? As in, do they really believe they’re real or do they know they’re not alive?
How far does anthropomorphism go in a toddler’s mind?
To my 3yo daughter, it only goes so far … or does it?
Toddler: [Holds up Charlie, her sock monkey.] “Mom, what’s under here?”
Me: “What’s under where?”
Toddler: [Points to his red hair fluff.] “Here.”
Me: “His hair? Hmm, his skull and his brains, I guess. Just like in your head!”
Toddler: [Thoughtfully sways Charlie around.] “And his fabric.”
(Pregnant pause while I try not to laugh.)
Toddler: “And his blood.”
There you have it: the insides of a stuffed animal, according to a 3yo. It’s a mixed bag, literally!
