The new school year has started, and aren’t we excited? Anyone else been late for school yet? (Dammit, it was just one minute, I swear!) And who else loves rushing around again in the morning while your kid brushes their teeth and chews their breakfast at a glacial pace? Sigh. But hey, learning is happening!
I get a kick out of hearing what Squish says happened during her school day; mostly she doesn’t tell me anything (why do kids do this?!). Most of the time I can’t take what she says as fact because it doesn’t make sense. Let’s celebrate the start of the school year with a quote from Squish after her orientation two weeks ago. Do you trust her?
Me: “Who else will be in your class?”
Squish: “I don’t know.”
Me: “What about the twins from your class last year?”
Husband: “What are their names?”
Squish: [long pause] “Tweedledee and Tweedledum!”
Let’s hope I find out just a morsel or two or truth from her this year!
Do your kids tell you what goes on during their school year?
😂🤣

Ahh! I also can’t get a straight answer out of my daughter. I wonder why I bother sending her to school for four hours a day. All I get is ‘I played’ 🙈🙈

Seriously! She takes home a worksheet that they do (and I roll my eyes … although she does learn something from them…) and then talks about the dress up clothes she played with. I seriously think she just goes to school for the dress up clothes.

Haha!! I’m sure (i hope) they are learning things. It does concern me that I can’t get her to talk about her day. But maybe that will change as she gets older.

Oh man, I hope so. I think that fostering a trusting relationship with our kids will help them keep the communication open. That and being genuinely interested in what they’re doing (which we are!!)

I feel like I play 20 questions with my 5 year old at the end of the day and still don’t get much out of her. I sure would love to be a fly on the wall during the day!

Me too! I really wonder what goes on – both what my kid does and says and also what the teacher does! I get a kick out of my kid imitating her teacher…

You have to be really creative in your questions and they don’t realize they’re answering….

Do you have any tips?
Sometimes during the rest of the day she’ll let something slip regarding what they did … but that’s it!

Well, the best time to get any info is right before bed…they’re tired, so they let their guard down, and they will do anything to push back bedtime. I ask really specific questions, and if she gave flip answers I would be a bit sarcastic…at dinner we also did best part of day and worst part of day….and we all had to answer. When my daughter heard that we had bad parts of our days, she realized that everyone does

I love those suggestions! Thank you so much for sharing. It’s so true that bedtime is a really open time for my daughter. She wants to snuggle the most then – and tell me shes loves me! I really like the dinnertime questions, too. That’s a great way to foster open communication!

Communication is key. I ask my daughter her opinion a lot too. If I’m getting dressed to go out, she’ll help me pick out jewelry, or we cook together….they talk when they don’t think you’re paying attention

You just have to know what questions to ask to find out about their day 🙂 I hope tweedledee and tweedledum aren’t in her class. Though I bet it would be a fun class if they were! 😀

Boy, have any hints for me? I go for questions that don’t lead to a “yes” or “no” answer, but that doesn’t seem to help.
HA! What’s funny is that the twins in her school are actually quite bright.

I ask questions like
What was your favorite part in school today?
Did anything funny happen?
Did your teacher read any books to you? Which books?
Who did you play with? What did you play?
Did anything or anyone make you laugh?
Did you help someone today?

Those are super questions!! I do ask the first 4 .. but I will have to ask those last two – I love the emotional tilt to it. Maybe it’ll help her open up. Thanks the suggestions!

Bwahaha! She is hilarious! So far all I’ve gotten from Baby Girl is that she had snacks and played on the playground. She’s only in it for the snacks.

Hopefully they’re good snacks, lol. It seems my daughter’s school is sponsored by Nabisco graham crackers – only.
I think at this early age preschool is kind of like a big playdate with some songs and random fun facts thrown in. 😀

So far I’ve only heard about Honeycombs. Definitely. It’s funny, since that’s the only thing my son talks about usually, recess and lunch 😀

My girls tell me everything, Katherine. it’s cool especially when it’s kind No. 2, because she’s not the jabberjaws type. Add in the oldest, who works full time at Dick’s Sporting Goods and takes online courses, and there’s never a dull moment with stories!
